Anyways, This week in IP I made mucho progress. I finished the wet work on two of my pieces (shown throughout). One of the piece is medium sized and is intended to help create a transition throughout all of my work. (Pieces from skinny to fat). I wanted the singular orifice to look as if it were whimpering, or sucking. I also created a muscle texture that protrudes from the top and side of the neck.. hopefully giving it a little more individual character.
The other piece shown here buds three separate times. First it buds into two segments, then I split one of the sections a second time. I think this creature is hilarious. From far away it is such an awkward, lumpy, transforming organism. Janie siad she thought that two of the tentacle like structures looked like someones legs spread open. I LOVE that. This guy seems to be evoking many different emotions, gestures, and organisms.
This week I've also begun to do some wax surface experiments... here are the images for that. I'm not loving the blond color (when it's thick) so I'm thinking about adding some brown/orchre oxides to the wax and seeing what happens. As of right now the wax is over washes that I've previously laid down. I am liking the surface when there are more
I also am showing the image that's on my postcard. (Black background)
This weekend I look to continue working on my creature that's going into the ground, in addition to working more of the wax surfaces. I guess my questions pertain to the surfaces. Are you liking what you're seeing? I think it's hard to tell from these images what they would look like on an entire piece... but lemme know. I think I'm going to also begin making some sculptures that are fragmented pieces (janie's idea)--- emulating fragmentation... or loss... idk

Hope everyone's enjoying this fabulous weather:)
Last week of teaching the little 2 year old buggers (thank god)
ps sorry the formatting is so wack- I cannot figure out how to make it look nice
I love the subtle textures and colors of the thin wax over wash. Your postcard image looks great as well :) It's so dramatic
ReplyDeletethe postcard image looks great.
ReplyDeletejanie
I love where your work is going! These last two pieces are very expressive... the singular one definitely looks like he's whimpering, he has a lot of character. And the one with three buds is great, I think these will really tie things together with your other pieces. I don't like the thick yellow wax at all, but the other two detail images look great. Are you planning on leaving the wax on? I'm a little unsure of what exactly you're doing for your coloring, but I love that last detail surface image. Also, you're postcard image looks fantastic, you should be quite satisfied. It may not be glazed, but the structure itself is so interesting, it doesn't matter.
ReplyDeleteHi Drake!
ReplyDeleteWow! Your creatures look great and I can’t believe how much progress you’ve made in such a short amount of time. I really enjoy looking at these guys and I especially like the one that seems to be whimpering. I just want to rub his back? (I don’t know) and tell him it’s all going to be okay. As for your washes, I’m assuming that the bottom one is the final color and the other two are leading up to that? If so I really like the bottom one with all the different tones and I really like how the color falls in the grooves that you’ve made on their bodies. I think this will look wonderful on your sculptures and I can’t wait to see them in the show, especially if they smell like beeswax!
PS Your postcard image is great!
I thought I posted a comment here but it looks like it was lost somehow...
ReplyDeleteI agree with the other comments above. I like the last two wax washes. The color is nice. It's colorful without being too unnatural. I do worry though about the muscular texture in the clay being lost to the wax. I would really love to see it in person. I just love wax. It's a great material to work with and has such a wonderful texture. I think experimenting with wax was a really great move because it's great for mimicking flesh. Latex is another material that could be applied to clay that looks fleshy but I don't know how you feel about using unnatural materials. Like I mentioned before I have over a hundred pounds of paraffin wax if you want to try some just let me know.
This looks great, I love the size! I like the detail of the texture and think that is great to incorporate through a bunch of the pieces. The movement is great in your postcard and gives a preview of what’s to come. The overlapping in color and wax works well, it could be a little overwhelming on all sculptures so variety could work.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving all your images- Thanks for posting so many! I would love to come around and check out these surfaces in person. I have a feeling they look different in varying light? I think the wax could accentuate some of the features that are muscular in the clay-- the light is going to hit the wax in a very different way than the clay. I like the last two images of surface... and I like them because it's hard to tell what color they are- it really reminds me of looking at sponges or coral on a dive- because there's things growing on things- it's really hard to label organisms as one specific color. I like that.
ReplyDeleteVery exciting- can't wait to see what's coming!
